Thermowood Development

When specifying timber for a new show development for the Welsh Housing Association, Midlands developer Lovell needed a cladding product that would meet its environmental requirements as well as looking good for the future. Built on the site of a former church in The Vale of Glamorgan and designed to be the first Welsh housing development to achieve level four of the Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH), the site was designed to be as environmentally friendly and will feature Stellac Thermowood Clear Pine cladding facades supplied by International Timber.
With sixteen new rental properties, the site features two-storey homes ranging in size from two to four bedrooms, as well as two, two-bedroom apartments.
International Timber’s Stellac Thermowood Clear Pine was chosen by Lovell because it worked at both an aesthetical and practical level.  International Timber offers Stellac Thermowood Clear Pine cladding as an alternative to tropical hardwoods and products that use chemicals.  The company is the first and only producer to offer this carbon-neutral product.
Spokesperson for Lovell said: “We wanted a product that had the right eco credentials but would also look good for years to come.  We contacted the International Timber team for their recommendations and they suggested Stellac Thermowood Clear Pine because of its durability and sustainability.
“The knowledge and expertise offered by the International Timber team was invaluable. They even worked with our planners and offered a number of cladding samples for us to choose from, explaining the individual benefits of each product.”
Manufactured from timber sourced from sustainable forests, Stellac Thermowood Clear Pine is PEFC certified, offering a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwoods.  When left untreated and exposed to the elements, it will silver down to a beautiful natural finish.  The product lifetime is thirty years as assessed by the BRE. The BRE is a general expectation of Thermowood generic. International Timber is the only company in the UK to offer a ten year underwritten guarantee against rot.
Thermowood is produced by steam heating premium quality pine sourced from Finland, to temperatures in excess of 212 centigrade.  The heat penetrates to the core of the wood, driving out moisture and resin and eliminating leakage through knots. Clear pine has no visible knots on the face and two edges, which is what differentiates it from ordinary pine.  The resulting product is more stable and durable with high resistance to moisture or decay caused by fungi, making it ideally suited for use as an external cladding material.
International Timber is a leading supplier of timber solutions, providing a superior range of products in hardwoods, soft woods, clear softwoods and treated products, as well as standard and bespoke machined profiles.  With an in house vacuum coating facility that is Sikkens approved, International Timber is able to offer a range of coating options for Timber cladding.
