International Timber recently supplied material to Monmouthshire timber supplies Ltd for the Champions Festival football pitch at Cardiff Bay.

The floating pitch hosted the Ultimate Champions match which saw Ryan Giggs and a host of other European football legends play against each other as part of the Champions League festival.

Over the course of four days, the pitch also played host to loads of community activity, including walking football, refugee teams from Cardiff, Swansea and Newport, a deaf football friendly international, learning disability and youth age groups matches.

The clients, Fernleigh Design, submitted a quotation for the timber, asking for consultation advice on which product to use for the bespoke pitch. After considering the specific needs of the client and the unusual usage of the timber, OSB 3 structural boards were recommended for the project.

The different aspects of the pitch were additionally taken on board. The pitch had to slope from 88mm high in the middle to 18mm on the edges – these heights were calculated and the 3x2pse were cut down to size. Along with the OSB 3 structural boards, timber and mdf sheets were supplied for the surroundings of the pitch, whilst Fernleigh Design supplied the acrylic sheets and printed banners for the sponsors.

In total, 590 OSB 3 structural boards were used to create the floating, Cardiff Bay football pitch.

The Champions Festival event went off without a hitch and the uniqueness of the pitch didn’t go unnoticed. Tony Sutton, Director of Fernleigh Design, said: “The pitch was a great success and we received great comments from everyone involved.”
