Partnership Success Story
Customer Service key for Tomlinson Parbans and International Timber
When Tomlinson Parbans’ previous timber supplier went out of business the timber merchant and joinery manufacturer needed to source an alternative provider fast. Peter Lamb, now managing director, was looking for a knowledgeable importer that offered a regular delivery service for both softwood and hardwood. He chose International Timber and over two decades later the relationship is still going strong.
Established in 1850, the Stockport-based merchant now has a turnover in excess of £2.5-million and 20 full time employees. Thanks to the company’s reliable delivery service and ability to source and produce a wide range of products it has built up a trusted reputation in the surrounding area and is a key supplier to many local builders, tradesmen and joiners, as well as the DIY market.
Managing director Peter Lamb, who joined the company 31 years ago as a trainee manager, believes that choosing the right suppliers has played a key role in the company’s success over the years. He comments: “At Tomlinson Parbans we always put the customer first, and it is important to us that our suppliers share the same values.
“Our joinery workshop, which makes a selection of bespoke timber products including windows, stairs, conservatories, doors and gates in softwood and hardwood, has traditionally been an integral part of our business so when our previous timber supplier closed down I knew I had to act quickly in order to ensure we could continue to meet our customers’ needs.
“At the time, very few importers were offering regular delivery service for softwood and hardwood. However, International Timber provided both and was knowledgeable and keen to quote. The company has a high profile yard in Trafford Park and a good reputation so I decided to give them a go.”
Peter was impressed by International Timber’s efficient delivery service and forward-thinking approach. He continues: “International Timber is continually introducing new products and services, enabling us to continually evolve and remain competitive as a business. The timber is of exceptional quality and they can often source unusual wood, giving us a leading edge and enabling us to capture high value orders.
“Thanks to twice weekly deliveries we never have to wait long for stock replenishment or special orders. This means we can adopt a just-in-time stock control method, allowing us to save space and reduce costs. Above all though, it enables us to offer our customers a fast and responsive service to meet their needs.
“At Tomlinson Parbans, we strive to deliver excellent customer service and expect our suppliers to do the same. At International Timber there is always a friendly voice on the end of the telephone willing to help with our enquiries. The company has continually met, and often exceeded, my expectations; which is why we haven’t looked back since choosing International Timber as our key supplier over 20 years ago.”
